Boardman’s SAGE Center serves up safety, fly fishing

BOARDMAN — The SAGE Center in Boardman continues its tradition of serving up community programming with two events April 18 and 20.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee will be on hand April 18, noon to 5 p.m., for the free Family Safety Day featuring first responders and much more at the center.

“As far as family safety goes, I think it makes sense to bring in hunter education and talk about gun safety,” said SAGE Center assistant manager Breena Beck.

Beck said people coming to the afternoon event can walk away with information and materials to talk about emergency preparedness at home.

“Do your kids know who to call in case of an emergency, or if a police officer knocks on the door and says, ‘You have to shelter in place,’” Beck asked. “None of us want to think of those things but having a brief and realistic conversation about it on a more frequent basis is really healthier for everyone.”

Beck said the event also will feature crafts and games and even a visit from the Lamb Weston Fry Truck with everyone’s favorite Belgian invention for a familiar potato treat just right for pairing with a hamburger.

Beck said several businesses will set up booths to share information.

This event is in its third year, and will include participation from the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Morrow County Emergency Management, Boardman Police Department, Boardman Fire and Rescue District, Morrow County Public Health Department, Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 and Morrow County Local Emergency Planning Committee members and other participants.

“The Morrow County Local Emergency Preparedness Committee has monthly meetings open to the public where anyone can get involved and they’re responsible for community outreach,” Beck said. “Then every year, they have a Family Safety Day. They coordinate among themselves to have this event they all show up for.”

The SAGE Center on April 20 turns from the focus on safety to the Jurassic Flats Carp Clave and Fly Expo.

“This is a new one here,” Beck said, “and it’s a whole new concept.”

The event runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Beck said the nearby marina will make the fly-fishing demonstrations more real as attendees can start with lectures at the building and then migrate to the water to see demonstrations of casting techniques.

Beck said the presenters will include Bill Marts, of the Schmoots Clooper Invitational Tournament, Daryl Eakens, Eric Leininger and Ryan Mock.

“The speakers are professional fly fishermen and some of them have traveled all over the world,” Beck said. “Fly-fishing for carp is not a new concept, and a lot of people travel to Belize and the Baja Peninsula to fish, so they will be talking about that. Some of them have different equipment, different poles and weights, and you apply each piece of equipment to what you’re fishing for.”

She said although the presentations end within the SAGE Center at 3 p.m., the demonstrations at the Boardman Marina Park will go on until about 6 p.m., when an after-party begins at Two Barrels Taps and Grill in the River Lodge.

“I think it will be a really incredible mix of people talking about the different areas of expertise they have in fly-fishing,” Beck said.

She said food vendors will be on hand, including 3rd Generation BBQ, Polynesian Grill and Farm Grounds Coffee.

There’s no such thing as a bad event,” at the SAGE Center, Beck said. “We are a community hub and it’s so interesting to see the groups reaching out to us. We just try to be as accommodating as possible. We love getting people in the doors.”
