Local roundup: Mac-Hi sweeps Umatilla in EOL baseball

UMATILLA — McLoughlin took an early lead, then had to hold on in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Umatilla 8-6 on Tuesday, April 9, in the first game of their Eastern Oregon League doubleheader.
The Pioneers completed the sweep with a 19-4 victory in the second game.
In the opener Mac-Hi (6-7 overall, 2-0 EOL) took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, then added a run in the third for a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers tacked on five more runs in the top of the fourth for a seemingly comfortable 8-0 lead.
In the fourth, Cooper Yensen hit a two-run double to left field, then later scored on a passed ball. Matthew Ruder sent the final run across the plate with a double to right field.
The Vikings (2-6, 0-2) chipped away at the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.
In the seventh, the Vikings scored all three runs with two outs. The first came off a bases-loaded hit batter, followed by a bases-loaded walk. Brian Younger-Morris then hit an RBI single to pull the Vikings within 8-6.
The rally ended when Alex Valdez III was caught trying to steal home.
Yensen picked up the win, pitching 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Linkin Zamudio hit a triple and drove in a run for Umatilla, while Younger-Morris hit a double and had two RBIs, and David Garcia had two hits.
In the second game, Jace Heckman had a big outing in the Pioneers’ 10-run third inning, hitting an RBI double on his first time through the lineup, then added a two-run triple that gave Mac-Hi an 11-3 lead.
Mac-Hi added seven runs in the fourth, highlighted by an RBI double by Adrian Camarena, an RBI triple by Dallen Duncan, and a single by Landon Gareis that brought in two runs.
Duncan picked up the win, allowing one run on one hit with 11 strikeouts.
For the Vikings, RJ Estrada, Carter Monahan and Valdez III each had a hit.
PILOT ROCK 25, ELGIN 0 (5) — Chase Corwin pitched a perfect game as the Rockets opened Special District 7 play with a home win over the Huskies.
Corwin struck out all 15 batters he faced, then helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-6 with a double and two RBIs.
Pilot Rock (7-2 overall, 1-0 SD7) opened the game with 11 runs in the first, then put the game out of reach with 12 runs in the second.
The Rockets also took advantage of five errors, 12 walks and seven hit batters.
Krister Litfin went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, Brock Stelk went 2-for-4 with a double and five RBIs, and Deacon Gourlie hit three singles and drove in four runs.
STANFIELD/ECHO 14, DUFUR 4 (5) — Landon Bailey threw 4 1/3 innings of no hit ball, helping the Tigers to a Special District 7 road win over the Rangers.
Bailey also went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, as all but one Stanfield/Echo batter had a hit on the day.
The Tigers (5-6 overall, 1-0 SD7) took a 6-2 lead after two innings and never let up. They added three runs in the third, two in the fourth and three more in the third.
Blaine McClure had three of the Tigers’ 16 hits, including a double and three RBIs. Connor Logan and Joe Crawford also hit doubles, while Logan added four stolen bases.
Sonny Wilson had the lone hit for the Rangers (1-7, 0-4), a double in the fifth inning that drove in two runs.
IRRIGON 13, SHERMAN 3 — The Knights broke up a close game with nine runs in the top of the fifth inning for a Special District 7 road win over the Huskies.
In the fifth, Zane Acock hit a two-run double, Austin Wells hit a sacrifice fly, Acock scored on a passed ball, and Xander Olmin hit an RBI single to give the Knights (4-4 overall, 1-3 SD7) an 8-3 lead.
Two more runs came across on passed balls, Brayden Locey hit an RBI single, and the final run of the inning came off an error for a 12-3 lead.
Locey went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Acock drove in two runs.
HERMISTON 17, PASCO 7 (6) — Hermiston put an end to an eight-game losing streak with a Mid-Columbia Conference home win over Pasco.
Jr Starr went 3-for-5 with a double and five RBIs to lead Hermiston. He hit a three-rouble in the third inning, and a two-run single in the sixth.
Hermiston led 3-1 after two innings, then scored seven in the third for a 10-1 lead. The Bulldogs led things off with a bases-lead walk, Cougar Philippi hit a two-run single, and Starr hit a two-run double for a 9-1 lead. Starr later scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-1.
Hermiston also scored five runs on four hits in the sixth inning.
Isaac Luevanos went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored for Hermiston, while Evan Hays went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
GRANT UNION 28, WESTON-MCEWEN 1 (5) — The Prospectors scored 18 runs in the first inning and cruised to a Special District 7 home win over the TigerScots.
Baryn Huerta, Weston Suchorski and Talon Van Cleave each drove in five runs for GU, while Van Cleave pitched for the win, scattering two hits while striking out 12 and walking one.
Easton Berry and Lane Levy each had a hit for the TigerScots (2-10 overall, 0-4 SD7). Levy drove in W-M’s run in the fifth inning with a double to left field.
Prep softball
PENDLETON 4-18, ONTARIO 1-0 — Reese Furstenberg gave up one run on one hit and stuck out 15 as the Bucks won the first game of their Greater Oregon League doubleheader over the host Tigers.
After two scoreless innings, Pendleton scored one run in the third off a single by Josie Jenness.
In the fourth, the Bucks stretched their lead to 3-0 as Madelyn Lieuallen and Avery Quaempts scored on the same error.
Ontario scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bucks got the run back in the top of the seventh as Ella Sams scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the seventh, Furstenberg struck out two Ontario batters and one hit into a groundout.
Quaempts went 2-for-3 with a triple, and Lieuallen went 2-for-4.
Ontario’s Bri Kemble pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out 15.
In the second game, Furstenberg threw a one-hitter with six strikeouts as the Bucks completed the sweep.
Pendleton opened the game with five runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run home run by Avery Krigbaum.
The big blow to the Tigers came when the Bucks scored 10 runs in the fifth inning for an 18-0 lead. They scored three runs off bases-loaded walks, and another off a hit batter, and Lieuallen hit a two-run double.
For the game, Lieuallen, Jenness, Madeline Schumacher and Maryn Broker all hit doubles, while Jenness and Schumacher also hit triples.
HERMISTON 22, PASCO 1 (3) — Hermiston scored 16 runs in the second inning to take control of the game early, and never let up in a Mid-Columbia Conference road win over Pasco.
Hermiston belted out 21 hits, including triples by Kaylee Elliott and Mika Cherry, and doubles by Sydney Stocker, Karsyn Botefur, Cherry and Kenley Venoy.
Stocker went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Elliott went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Rylee Richman drove in two runs, and pitched the first two innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out three.
WESTON-MCEWEN 12, PILOT ROCK 0 (5) — Bre Ward threw a two-hitter and struck out 11 as the second-ranked TigerScots shut out the visiting Rockets in Special District 7 play.
“She pretty much, the last two innings, found her groove and she was on,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “I was really proud of the girls. We are finishing games better and it’s important that we play all innings with the same focus.”
W-M (8-0 overall, 4-0 SD7) scored one run in the first, then added four in the second, four in the third, and capped things off with three runs in the fourth.
In the third, Janie Helfrecht hit an RBI double for the TigerScots, while Bailey Moore had an RBI single, and Ava Sams drove in two runs with a double to center field for a 9-0 lead.
In the fourth, two runs scored on a Kylie Kramer single, and Kramer later scored on a passed ball for W-M’s final run.
Paedyn Bennett and Kashley Golden each had a hit for the Rockets (6-5, 1-3).
ECHO/STANFIELD 16, IRRIGON 1 (4) — Nevaeh Thew hit a grand slam in the first inning to help the Cougars to a Special District 7 home win over the Knights.
The Cougars (6-7 overall, 2-2 SD7) scored nine runs in the first inning, two in the second, one in the third, then finished the game with four in the fourth to invoke the mercy rule.
Jaime Weems added two-run homer in the second inning, and Mazie Reeser hit a three-run triple in the fourth. Kylee Jackson went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.
Mykael Graham pitched the first three innings for the Cougars, striking out fur and walking five. Reeser pitched the fourth, striking out two and walking three.
For the Knights (0-7, 0-4), Natalia Gridley and Megan Player each had a single.
UMATILLA 11, MCLOUGHLIN 10 — The Vikings rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to eke out an Eastern Oregon League home win over the Pioneers.
“I am so proud of the girls,” Umatilla coach Erick Olson said. “The type of belief it takes to come back and win a game like that isn’t something that can be coached. This group has just found something special about themselves. And, we still have so much work to do.”
Umatilla (3-5 overall, 1-0 EOL) opened the bottom of the seventh with a single by Esperanza Rodriguez-Ruiz, and Brooke Gerard reached on an error. A single to right field by Rashayla McCallister scored two runs, and an RBI single by Kaylonni Schaefer pulled the Vikings within 10-9.
A fielder’s choice by Haidyn Thompson put the tying run and the winning run across the plate with one out.
The Vikings opened the scoring with a run in the second, but the Pioneers roared back with five in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth for a10-1 lead.
Umatilla got five runs back in the sixth, and Gerard faced just three batters in the top of the seventh before the Vikings worked their magic.
Thompson hit a double and drove in three runs on the day, while Gerard and McCallister each had two RBIs.
For Mac-Hi (2-4, 0-1), Allie Sasser, Aisling Giguiere and Kayla Chaney hit doubles, while Giguiere drove in three runs
Giguiere struck out 10 in the loss, but she gave up 11 runs on nine hits and walked six.
Boys lacrosse
HERMISTON 15, WALLA WALLA 2 — Frankie Trevino had five goals, and the Bulldogs ran their record to 9-0 with a road win over the Blue Devils.
Blake Palzinski added four goals, four assists and won nine face-offs for the Bulldogs, while Kellen Young had three goals and four assists, and James Young and Dominic Echerverria each had a goal.
Hermiston goalkeeper Kaden Hasty had nine saves, while the defense held Walla Walla to just 11 shots on goal.
Boys soccer
PASCO 7, HERMISTON 0 — Hermiston fell to 4-6 in Mid-Columbia Conference play with a home loss to Pasco, which improved to 9-1.
Gabriel Lara finished with three saves for Hermiston.
Girls tennis
HANFORD 7, HERMISTON 0 — The Falcons handed the Bulldogs just their second Mid-Columbia Conference loss of the season in Richland, Washington.
Hanford’s Lily Deng won the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Dulce Valencia, while Nicole Samaan beat Mallory Caplinger 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.
At No. 3, Le-Yi Wang shut out Gisselle Valencia 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 4, Vivian Vargo topped Amya Caballero 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles, Hermiston’s Aspyn Inners and Cate Doherty lost 7-5, 6-2 to Nikki Reyes and JoJo Safranski at No. 1, while Abby Welt and Carolyn Whiting kept the Falcons’ win streak going with a 7-5, 7-6 win over Grace Winebarger and Reagan Stanek.
Jade Wang and Tiffany Qian wrapped up the day for Hanford with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Braylon Mecham and Halle Gribskov.
PENDLETON 2, WESTON-MCEWEN 2 — The Bucks’ Adrianne Demianew remained undefeated on the year with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Yulissa Camargo at No. 2 singles in Pendleton.
At No. 1 doubles, Pendleton’s Ashtyn Larson and Rachel Walker continued their dominant play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Annika Holden and Krystle Romero.
The TigerScots got a win from Lirian Holden at No. 1 singles, beating Taybree Walker 6-1, 6-2. W-M secured the split as Keighlee Bunker beat Lilly Noble 6-1, 6-7, 10-6 at No. 3 singles.
UMATILLA 7, IONE 1 — The host Vikings won all but the No. 4 doubles match in beating the Cardinals.
Leslie Rivera Castro opened things up with an 8-6 win over Vicki De La Torre at No. 1 singles, followed by an 8-5 win by Dulce Serrano-Coria over Leelynn Vandever.
At No. 3 singles, Eden Enkey topped Sophie Qualls 8-6, and Andrea Cortes completed the sweep with a 6-3 win over Keltie Rietmann.
In doubles, Esmeralda Rodriguez Muniz and Valery Palomino-Barajas beat Kelly Doherty and Jolene Serrano 8-6 in the No. 1 match, while Emma Strege and Briseida Mendoza-Rodriguez beat Lizzy Doherty and Brionna Serrano 8-6 at No. 2.
Daniela Lopez and Patty Oseguera Gonzalez won the No. 3 match with an 8-6 win over Gift Cross and Zamira Dotson.
Ione’s Novalee Campbell and Phegley Padberg won the No. 4 match with a 7-5 victory over Eden Enkey and Ashley Mendoza,
Boys tennis
PENDLETON 2, WESTON-MCEWEN 1 — Trysten Burns won the No. 1 singles match for the host TigerScots, but the Bucks won the remaining matches.
Burns defeated Matthew Stansbury 6-3, 6-1, followed by Pendleton’s Miller Johnson coming away with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jose Barahona at No. 2 singles.
Hunter Henderson topped Jay Wilbourn 6-3, 6-2 to seal the win for the Bucks.
UMATILLA 5, IONE 0 — The Vikings won all four singles matches and the one doubles match for a sweep of the visiting Cardinals.
Umatilla’s Joel Arellano won the No. 1 singles match 8-5 over Kyle McGill, followed by Liam Early’s 8-2 win over Michael McElligott.
At No. 3 singles, Julian Martinez topped Leonardo Lemus 8-3, and Pedro Figueroa Mendoza finished off the singles matches with an 8-2 win over Hunter Scroggin.
In doubles, Abel Medrano and Josh Mendoza beat William McElligott and Fernando Serrano 8-1.
HANFORD 6, HERMISTON 1 — The Bulldogs’ lone win came at No. 1 doubles, where Carson Evans and Kelyn Purves defeated Eric Ming and Ezra Hasty 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
The Falcons swept the singles, giving up just four games in four matches. In the No. 1 match, Adam Tan beat Edgar Umaña 6-2, 6-2. Hanford did not lose a game in the final three singles matches.
At No. 2 doubles, Hanford’s Kevin Wguyew and Jaydon Lee beat Jake Lines and Isac Loera 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 3 doubles, Charlie Bales and Gabe Cadasug defeated Dante Fernandez and Brody Adams 7-6, 6-2.
