Local roundup: Weston-McEwen remains perfect after sweep of Irrigon

ATHENA — Bre Ward pitched two one-hitters with 11 strikeouts as Weston-McEwen beat Irrigon 22-0 and 19-0 on Wednesday, April 17, in a Special District 7 doubleheader.
“The Irrigon games were a chance to play everyone, and our girls played well,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “We stayed aggressive on offense and solid on defense, picking the one runner off that got to third for Irrigon.”
The TigerScots improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in SD7 play heading into Thursday’s nonleague game at 3A Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa.
In the opener, W-M jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first inning, then added nine runs in the third to invoke the mercy rule after three innings.
Bailey Moore hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run in the first inning, while Bre Ward and Ava Sams hit RBI triples.
In the third inning, Hailey Stallings and Ward hit back-to-back RBI doubles, and Cara Freels and Ki-Lin Dennett hit two-run doubles.
Stallings went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Sams hit two triples, and Ward went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs.
Megan Player had the lone hit for the Knights (2-9, 0-6).
In the nightcap, the TigerScots opened the game with 10 runs in the first inning, added one in the second and eight in the third to again invoke the mercy rule.
Lily Langford went 3-for-3 with two triples, a double and five RBIs. She hit both of her triples in the third inning, and had a two-run double in the first.
Stallings hit a two-run double in the first, while Hope Berry added a two-run double in the third.
Alivia Gridley hit a single for the Knights in the second inning.
UMATILLA 16, RIVERSIDE 3 (6) — Meghan Owens struck out 11 in leading the Vikings to an Eastern Oregon League road win over the Pirates.
“We are converting all our hard work in practice to success on the field,” Umatilla coach Erick Olson said. “I’m really excited for our athletes to see all that we are demanding of them pay off when we put on the uniform.”
Umatilla (5-6 overall, 3-1 EOL) scored five runs in the first and two in the second for a 7-0 lead. Riverside got three runs back in the third, but the Vikings would score nine runs over the next three innings to pull away for good.
Zamara Vara and Maddisyn Rico each hit a double and had three RBIs for the Vikings. Rico and Thompson each had four hits.
Malia Hasbell had two hits for the Pirates (1-10, 0-5), while Maycee Strebin and Chloe Gomez each had one.
Track and field
Hermiston held out several of their top athletes at the second Mid-Columbia Conference meet at Southridge, but the Bulldogs dominated the throws on the girls side for a 102-47 win over Pasco.
The Suns’ sprinters were too much for Hermiston to handle as Southridge posted a 107-39 win.
Hermiston has its top boys and girls athletes entered in the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field in Eugene on Friday and Saturday.
The Bulldogs took three of the top four spots in the discus, with Avonlea Edwards winning with a throw of 112-2. Rian Woodard (93-2) was third, and Alexis Ackerman (92-2) was fourth.
Ackerman won the javelin with a toss of 108-10, while Hope Melville (99-6) was third, and Lucy Teegarden (96-4) was fourth.
Ackerman also was second in the shot put with a PR of 33-0 1/2, while Edwards (31-3 3/4) was third, and Tuta Sepeni (29-11 1/4) was fourth.
Teegarden was second in the high jump with a PR of 5 feet, while Jenna Jared was fourth in the long jump (14-6 1/2), and Brooklin Bacon was fifth in the triple jump (30-3 1/4).
On the track, Abigayl Dainty was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.81, while Alexah Moreno was third in the 400 with a PR of 1:07.91.
Madeline Franke (2:38.16) and Sukhprit Kaur (2:39.07) were third and fourth in the 800, while Maggie Meenderinck (5:48.26) and Lillian Fields (5:48.78) were second and third in the 1,600.
On the boys’ side, Hermiston beat Pasco 98-47, while Southridge topped the Bulldogs 88-5-56.5.
Hunter Hansell won the high jump with a height of 5-10, finished second in the 110 hurdles with a PR of 17.45, and was third in the 300 hurdles (46.55).
Logan Zumwalt placed second in the long jump (19-7 1/4), the triple jump (41-7), and the 200 with a PR of 24.12.
The Bulldogs took the top five spots in the shot put, led by Maxem Shilhanek, who won with a PR of 46-7 1/4. Angel Ordaz Garcia was second (46-2 3/4), followed by Elijah Robinson (46-2 1/2), Robert Akers (45-10) and Wesley Leathers (43-0 1/4).
Shilhanek also won the discus (127-8), followed by Akers and Hunter Allen, who tied for second with throws of 125-4.
Carter Cleveland placed second in the high jump (5-10), fifth in the javelin (119-5) and was fourth in the triple jump (36-9 3/4).
BRUIN INVITE — Ione sophomore Henry Giefing won the 200 with a personal best 23.21, and was second in the 100 (11.64) at Columbia High School in White Salmon, Washington.
Fellow sophomore Carter Eynetich won the javelin with a toss of 125-7, and he was eighth in the discus (98-6 1/2).
In the girls’ division, freshman Phegley Padberg was eighth in the javelin with a mark of 79-9.
College baseball
SPOKANE 2-4, BLUE MOUNTAIN 1-1 — The Sasquatch held the visiting Timberwolves to just two runs over two games to knock BMCC out of the top spot in the NWAC East standings.
Spokane and Wenatchee Valley are tied at the top of the East standings at 10-4, while BMCC is second at 9-5.
In the opener, each team scored a run in the sixth inning, and Spokane scored in the bottom of the eighth to eke out the win.
Troy Shepard pitched the first eight innings for Spokane, scattering four hits, striking out 15 and walking none.
Joaquin Velez-Fucal drove in BMCC’s run with an RBI single, while Otho Savage pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.
In the second game, BMCC scored its lone run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Kailen Larkin.
Spokane scored twice in the fifth, and twice in the eighth off a two-run home run by Andrew Charron.
Boys tennis
ONTARIO 5, PENDLETON 1 — The Tigers won two of three singles matches, and swept the doubles for a home win over the Bucks on Tuesday.
Pendlston’s lone win came at No. 3 singles, where Hunter Henderson beat Humberto Gonzalez 6-2, 6-2.
Ontario’s Jack Hally won the No. 1 match 6-0, 6-0 over Matthew Stansbury, and Mads Holse won the No. 2 match 6-4, 6-1 over Miller Johnson.
SOUTHRIDGE 5, HERMISTON 2 — The Suns swept the singles matches, but the host Bulldogs won the first and third doubles matches Tuesday in Mid-Columbia Conference action.
Hermiston’s Edgar Umana and Kelyn Purves beat Calvin Collette and Ryker Sexton 6-1, 6- in the top doubles match, while Dante Fernandez and Brody Adams posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mitchell Lee and Zach Higgins at No. 3.
In singles, Southridge’s Kyle Chan beat Carson Evans 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 match, while Ashwin Joshi shut out Levi Shult 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.
The Suns’ Skylar Phanekham won at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Joaquin Nava, and Parker Collette finished off the singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Jake Lines.
WESTON-MCEWEN 2, STANFIELD 1 — The TigersScots won two of three singles matches Tuesday to beat the host Tigers.
Trysten Burns won the No. 1 match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Pablo Arellano, while Jose Barahona won at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Efrain Hernandez.
Stanfield’s Jesus Arellano won the No. 3 match with an 8-1 win over Jay Wilbourn.
Girls tennis
WESTON-MCEWEN 4, STANFIELD 2 — The TigerScots gave up just 11 games over four singles matches in taking down the host Tigers on Tuesday.
Lirian Holden cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jaki Bartoshek at No. 1 singles, while Yulissa Camargo topped Hope Russel 8-2 at No. 2.
At No. 3, Keighlee Bunker made quick work of Julietta Ramirez 8-1. Stanfield won the No. 4 match as Sarah Thomas beat Addison Carey 8-6.
In doubles, W-M’s Annika Holden and Crystal Romero won at No. 1, beating Aylin Gomez and Kiera Sharp 4-6, 6-3, 10-5, while Stanfield’s Kylee Almonte and Lilyana Villalobos beat Lyla Rovers and Jolene Wolf 8-3 at No. 2.
