By the way: I Love My City gears up for serving, celebrating

I Love My City Weekend kicks off May 18, 2024, with a morning of community service projects throughout town. It concludes May 19, 2024, with a faith-based celebration at the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center.
The community is invited to participate in I Love My City Weekend, which includes community service projects and a celebration in Hermiston. Register via www.ilovehermiston.com.
Volunteers will gather Saturday, May 18, at 8:30 a.m. on Festival Street, 180 NE Second St., for a group photo and prayer before heading out to project sites throughout the town.
Service projects include cleanup in downtown Hermiston, several parks and trails, car washes, laundry services, haircuts, visiting senior facilities and recycling efforts. At noon, volunteers can enjoy a free lunch at McKenzie Park, 320 S. First St.
The event concludes with a faith-based celebration Sunday, May 19, 10 a.m. at the Eastern Oregon Trade and Event Center, 1705 E. Airport Road.

The city of Umatilla and the Pacific Northwest Veterans’ Alliance are preparing for the Conrad Skinner Memorial Golf Tournament at Big River Golf Course, Umatilla. Veterans golf for free.
The event tees off Friday, May 17, 4 p.m. with the Par 3 Skins Shootout. The cost is $40. To play, participants must pre-register for the main tournament by Thursday, May 16.
The four-person modified scramble begins with a shotgun start Saturday, May 18, at 9:30 a.m. It costs $100 per player. Six local veterans will be honored during a public ceremony at 8 a.m. in front of the clubhouse.

Plan ahead for the annual book sale hosted by the Friends of the Hermiston Public Library. The members only sale begins May 30, 5-7 p.m. at Hermiston City Hall, 180 NE Second St. It includes cookies and punch.

Maxwell Market kicks off the 2024 season on May 30, 4-7 p.m. at the Maxwell Siding Event Center & Pavilion, 225 S. First Place, Hermiston. In addition to locally grown produce, the weekly farmers market features arts and crafts vendors, beer, food and live music.

Mark your calendars for Cultura Fest 2024. Hosted by Cafe Cultura and Casa Gracia, the free community event is May 25, 4-9 p.m. in the parking lot at Sunrise Cafe, 101 Front St., Boardman.
The celebration highlights cultural diversity and community spirit. It will feature more than two dozen vendors, raffle prizes, music by DJ El Muneko and a street dance. Beverages will be available for purchase from a bar provided by Macario’s Mexican Restaurant.
