Hermiston’s Starr picks up MCC baseball honor

- Hermiston’s JR Starr (20) hits a line drive March 22, 2024, against Hanford at Hermiston. Starr was named to the Mid-Columbia Conference second team as a utility player.
HERMISTON — JR Starr was the lone Hermiston player to earn Mid-Columbia Conference baseball honors, voted on by the conference coaches.
Starr was selected as a second-team utility player for the second year in a row.
“He had a really good year,” Hermiston coach Dave Padilla said. “He was second in batting average in our league. The first guy (Dane Chavez of Kennewick) hit .491. He really isn’t a pitcher or a shortstop, but that’s where he was willing to play for me.”
Richland swept the conference honors, with Dallas Bennett named player of the year, Alec Ammerman the pitcher of the year, and Grant Richardson was named coach of the year by his peers after leading the Bombers to a 16-0 MCC record.
Starr hit .471 with 24 hits. He had 13 singles, eight doubles, three triples and 11 RBIs. He also scored 16 runs and had six stolen bases. In the field, he had 10 errors on 69 total chances.
“I was disappointed he wasn’t on the first team,” Padilla said. “I thought he should be because of his batting average. He was fine with it. I think I was more upset than he was.”
On the mound, Starr pitched 22 1/3 innings. He gave up 53 runs on 42 hits, struck out 15 and walked 16. He had an ERA of 9.090.
“He was willing to do whatever it took, even if he had to sacrifice what he wanted to do,” Padilla said of Starr’s pitching. “He was a great player for the program.”
The Bulldogs finished 3-13 in MCC play and 4-15 overall.
Starr, a natural outfielder, has signed to play baseball at Linfield University in McMinnville.
“He’s a hardworking young man and he will do good at the next level,” Padilla said. “He has the mindset and tools to do it.”
Starr also was selected to play in the MCC 3A/4A Senior All-Star Game at 5:30 p.m. May 29, at Richland High School.
