HERMISTON — Nadalie Cannell has a laundry list of goodness this season on the golf course, and the Hermiston junior added to her accomplishments when she was named the Mid-Columbia Conference golfer of the year.
“Not overly surprising considering she won every conference match, but it’s still an incredible honor,” Hermiston coach Troy Benson said. “I don’t know if it’s been done (winning all six matches). If it has, it’s been a while. It’s a pretty tough thing to do. I’d put my money on her to do it again next year.”
Chiawana’s David Whitt was named coach of the year, while Southridge won the regular-season title.
In the six conference matches, Cannell’s lowest score was a 73, with her average in the mid-70s.
In addition to her conference play, Cannell placed in the top five of the six tournaments the team played in, winning three of the six.
She also helped the Bulldogs to a spot in the District 8 tournament.
She placed second at the District 8 tournament, just one stroke behind the leader, to qualify for state for the third consecutive time.
This year, she placed 15th in a field of 140 golfers with a 162.
“She has improved every year,” said Benson, who noted Cannell was 19th as a sophomore and 25th as a freshman. “She is climbing the leaderboard every year. She lives and breathes golf. It’s truly her passion. I don’t know if there’s a day that goes by that she doesn’t swing a club or think about golf. It’s great to be witness to that.”
Hermiston junior Kyra Tolan was named to the second team.
“She has continued to improve,” Benson said. “Second team all-conference is a great accomplishment for her. Back-to-back years qualifying for state. She is consistent and she puts in a lot of time.”
