HEPPNER — Heppner junior Karver Wilkins had a sensational season on the mound, posting a 6-0 record in Special District 7 West play, along with a sterling 1.167 ERA, 41 strikeouts and 11 walks, earning him pitcher of the year honors.

A unanimous selection, Wilkins did his work over 30 innings, allowing five runs on 15 hits. He also was named to the 2A/1A all-state third team.

“He had a really good year,” Heppner coach Tim Wilkins said. “He has a good fastball, slider and curveball and is working the changeup. He gets a lot of weak contact and that helps. We don’t ask him to strike them all out, it’s easier that way and it saves on pitches.”

Also named to the SD7 first team for Mustangs were infielder Caden George (unanimous selection), first baseman Ryan Haugen, utility player Cameron Proudfoot, and designated hitter Caylan Proudfoot.

Tim Wilkins was named coach of the year after leading his team to an 11-1 league record.

George, a senior shortstop, had a .511 batting average with 24 hits, including six doubles, two triples, one home run and 14 RBIs in 47 at-bats. He also scored 25 runs and had 18 stolen bases. George was named to the all-state second team.

“Caden had a great year at the plate,” Wilkins said. “He hit the ball well. When you have a guy that hits the ball like that, you have a good year. He sees it (the ball), but he is aggressive. When your lead-off guy walks twice, that is unusual.”

Senior Cameron Proudfoot pitched and caught for the Mustangs. On the mound, he had a 3-0 record with a 1.419 ERA. He pitched 24 2/3 innings. He gave up 13 runs on 23 hits while striking out 36 and walking four.

At the plate, Proudfoot hit .457 with 21 hits in 46 at-bats. He hit three doubles, drove in 16 runs, and had 13 stolen bases. He was selected to the all-state third team.

“Cameron has caught for me all three years,” Wilkins said. “He is a super hard worker. He can do anything. I couldn’t ask for more out of the three of them. At the 2A baseball level, that’s all you can ask.”

George and Proudfoot will play in the 3A/2A/1A All-Star Series June 8-9 at Linfield University.

“It’s the first time I have ever had two players in there,” Wilkins said.

Haugen, a sophomore, hit .316 in 38 at-bats. Among his 12 hits, he had five doubles and 14 RBIs. In the field, he has just two errors.

Caylan Proudfoot, a freshman, hit .395 in 38 plate appearances. He had 15 hits, nine RBIs, scored 14 runs and had five stolen bases.

Stanfield had three players named to the SD7 first team, with outfielders Connor Logan and Landon Bailey unanimous picks. Also named to the first team was first baseman Blaine McClure.

“The kids worked their tails off this year, and it was good to see it paid off for them,” Stanfield coach Brad Rogers said. “Things didn’t pan out like we wanted it to, but there was a lot of good competition.”

Logan, a senior, hit .472 with 17 hits in 36 at-bats. He had three doubles, two triples, 10 RBIs, nine runs scored and 12 stolen bases. He was chosen to play in the 3A/2A/1A All-Star Series.

Bailey, a junior, hit .429 in 35 plate appearances. He had 15 hits including two doubles, three RBIs, 14 runs scored and 20 stolen bases.

Bailey was named to the all-state second team, while Logan was named to the third team.

“That’s really nice, especially with the west side (of the state) loaded this year,” Rogers said. “They had a ton of studs.”

In 31 plate appearances, McClure, a junior, hit .355 with 11 hits, three doubles, six RBIs, five runs scored and nine stolen bases. He was named to the all-state honorable mention team.

Irrigon senior Brayden Locey was a unanimous selection as pitcher by the SD7 coaches, while senior Kaidan Hussey was a unanimous pick as an infielder, and junior Xander Olman was a first-team pick as a designated hitter.

Locey went 4-1 in SD7 play with a 1.775 ERA. Over 23 innings of work, he allowed 18 runs on 18 hits, striking out 33 and walking 17.

Hussey hit .333 on the year with 14 hits in 36 plate appearances. He had three doubles, seven RBIs, scored 20 runs, and had 20 stolen bases.

Olman batted .344 with 11 hits in 36 at-bats. He had one double, 11 RBIs, 16 runs scored and 14 stolen bases.
