PENDLETON — The Blue Mountain Community College softball team had a young roster this season, but two players rose to the top and earned Northwest Athletic Conference East Region honors.
Avyree Miethe was selected as a first team utility player, while Gracie Hamilton was a second-team catcher.
North Idaho swept the East Region awards with Kennedy Hobson named most valuable player, Kristine Schmidt the pitcher of the year, and Shay Chapman was coach of the year after leading the Cardinals to a 28-0 record.
Miethe, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Warrenton, hit .448 during East Region play with 37 hits. The multi-talented player who played second base, shortstop and catcher, had seven doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 25 RBIs in 28 games.
She also had eight stolen bases and scored a team-high 34 runs. Defensively, her fielding average was .936 with 76 putouts.
“She was flexible,” BMCC coach Ben Knopf said. “It was because of what we needed. She was always team first and did whatever was needed of her. She was a walk-on player last year. I could tell right away she was stronger than most and she crushed the ball. She has a strong arm, quick release and good eyes. She was a good teammate. It will be hard to replace her.”
Hamilton, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Klamath Falls, hit .420 with 34 hits in 27 games. She had nine doubles, five home runs and a team-high 27 RBIs. She scored 22 runs and struck out just eight times in 81 at-bats.
Behind the plate, her fielding average was .891 with 86 putouts.
“She does a great job,” Knopf said. “She’s a good leader and her work ethic is top notch. At the plate, she’s got good eyes. She was clutch. She liked to swing for the fences.”
Hamilton will continue her career at Bushnell University in Eugene. The Beacons were 15-31 overall this season, and 8-19 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, which includes Southern Oregon, Oregon Tech and Eastern Oregon University.
The Timberwolves finished last in the NWAC East standings with a 5-23 record. They were 10-36 overall.
Knopf said he’s been recruiting for next season, and among his signees are Bailey Moore from Weston-McEwen, and right-handed pitcher Raelynn Weaver of Crook County.
