UMATILLA — Top players will rise to the top no matter how their team finishes in the league standings.
For McLoughlin and Umatilla that stands true, as players from both softball teams earned Eastern Oregon League and 3A all-state honors.
For the Pioneers, who found themselves in the state playoffs this spring, infielder Addy Leonetti and utility player Abi Perkins were named to the EOL first team, while infielder Aisling Giguiere was named to the second team.
“All three of these girls are honored to be on the all-league roster,” Mac-Hi coach Russell Vera said. “They work hard in the offseason and they each play hard every inning. They all are team leaders for Mac-Hi softball. Any high school coach would love to have them on their roster. I’m so proud of each and every one of them.”
Outfielder Kaylonni Schaefer was a first-team EOL pick for the Vikings, while infielder Maddisyn Rico was named to the second team.
Copper Nave of Enterprise/Joseph/Wallowa was named the player of the year, while Ayla Davies of Burns was the pitcher of the year, and Robert Medley of Burns was the coach of the year. He led the Hilanders to the league title with a record of 12-0.
Leonetti, a sophomore shortstop, hit .483 in 29 at-bats. As the No. 2 hitter, she had 10 hits, including one double, three triples and five RBIs. She scored 17 runs and had nine stolen bases. Defensively, she had three errors on 25 chances.
“Addy is a fighter,” Vera said. “She’s very quiet but knows the game and is a team leader.”
Leonetti also earned second-team all-state honors, and played in the 3A All-Star Series on June 2, at Wilsonville High School, along with Perkins.
Perkins, who played catcher, first base and shortstop, hit .321 in 28 at-bats, collecting nine hits, including one home run and 14 RBIs. The sophomore also scored 12 runs, and had just one error in 32 total chances.
“Abi is a tough girl,” Vera said. “She proved it with her bat this season. She wants to win just as much as anyone.”
Giguiere, who played first base when she wasn’t pitching, hit .484 with 15 hits, including three doubles and one home run. She had a team-high 18 RBIs, and scored six runs. In the field, the junior had zero errors on 11 total chances, and helped turn one double play.
“Aisling is a competitor,” Vera said. “She shows it on the mound as well at first base.”
Schaefer, a junior centerfielder, hit .487 in 39 at-bats. All 19 of her hits were singles. As the lead-off hitter, she also scored 16 runs, had three RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
“I was happy with the recognition that we got this year,” Umatilla coach Erick Olson said. “Kay-Kay’s (Schaefer) season is a microcosm of our team. She got better each and every week and can go as far as she wants in this sport.”
Schaefer, a second-team all-state pick, also played in the 3A All-Star Series. She went 1-for-3 leading off for her team in the two games. She had a bunt single, a stolen base, scored one run and caught all three fly balls that were hit her way in the outfield.
Rico, a senior shortstop, hit .444 in 36 plate appearances. She had 16 hits, including six doubles and one triple, 10 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
“Maddisyn Rico is an all-state level softball player and a first teamer, and had nearly identical numbers to last year when she earned that recognition,” Olson said. “I thought as a league, the coaches missed that one. But there is no way to put in words, or in this case statistics, to what our seniors Maddi, Braelyn (Cragun) and (manager) Luis (Ortiz-Cardenas) did for our program.”
