Drumroll please — the Hermiston High School marching band has reason to toot its own horn. Led by Sean McClanahan, HHS director of bands, the group returned from Portland with a Silver Standard award for its June 1 performance at the Starlight Parade during the Portland Rose Festival. Brass Fire Band will provide a sizzling start to the 2024 Music in the Parks concert series Monday, June 17, 7 p.m. at Boardman Marina Park, 1 NE Marine Drive. The group performs funk, jazz, rock, soul and blues.

Uniting people with food, fun and fellowship is the mission of the annual Juneteenth Celebration in Hermiston. The Hermiston Cultural Awareness Coalition will host the free community event June 22, 4-8 p.m., at McKenzie Park, 320 S. First St.

It includes a free barbecue, vendor booths, a bouncy house and music with DJ Moises Lopez. HCAC President Dave Gracia encourages people to bring lawn chairs and outdoor games.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery on June 19, 1865. It was designated as a federal holiday in 2021.
