HERMISTON — Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 announced plans for a pair of controlled burns leading up to Fourth of July fireworks shows in Stanfield and Hermiston.

According to the fire district’s Facebook page, the efforts are planned for Thursday, June 27, 7 p.m. near the Stanfield High School football field and Saturday, June 29, 8 a.m. at the Hermiston Butte.

In addition to smoky conditions, numerous crews and fire apparatus will be utilized during the efforts. Residents are asked to avoid the areas until fire crews have cleared the scene.

The fire district hosts controlled burns — including leading up to the Fourth of July — to remove dried brush and grass to reduce possible fuel for fire activity.
