- Representatives from about 20 nonprofit organizations participated in the inaugural Volunteer Fair on Oct. 24, 2023, at the Hermiston Community Center. Rebranded as the Service Organization Fair, the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce expects more than three dozen participants for this year’s event on Oct. 1, 2024, at the community center.
HERMISTON — Representatives from more than three dozen nonprofit organizations are expected to participate in the Service Organization Fair.
Hosted by the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce, the event brings people together to learn about resources and volunteer opportunities with area service groups, clubs and organizations. In its second year, the Service Organization Fair is Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2-6 p.m. at the Hermiston Community Center, 415 S. Highway 395.
Last year’s inaugural event featured about 20 organizations. Sherry Aubray, a volunteer with the Eastern Oregon Mission at Agape House, said it was a great way to let people know about the nonprofit’s mission and services.
Chamber Director Val Hoxie came up with the idea to host the event after talking to an elderly woman who inquired about available resources and volunteer opportunities in the community. Also, Hoxie was excited that a couple of busloads of students from Hermiston High School attended the inaugural event.
“We worry about who we are going to pass the torch to,” she said in an interview with Northeast Oregon Now. “A lot of volunteers are older. What are we doing to get the younger generation involved?”
