BANDON — For the second year in a row, Hermiston’s Nadalie Cannell won the Oregon Golf Association Winter Classic on Dec. 21 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

Cannell, 18, a senior at Hermiston High School, shot a 1-over 73 to win the event, securing her second consecutive tournament championship.

“The weather was sporadic,” Cannell said. “It was kind of a little bit of everything. A little bit of sunshine, lots of crazy wind but honestly, I was just trying to enjoy it.”

Cannell kicked off her first six holes in strong form, grabbing a birdie and four pars. But rain hit by the time she came to the seventh hole, with torrential downpours surging sideways across the course. Cannell took a double bogey on the seventh and a bogey on the eighth.

After the rain subsided, she bounced back with seven pars in a row.

“It was truly amazing watching how Nadalie handled herself and managed the course,” K.C. Cannell, Nadalie’s father, said. “Between the wind and the greens, it made for quite a challenge, but she adjusted when/where necessary and triumphed in these situations.”

On the 16th hole, Cannell drove the green, leaving herself a 30-yard chip, which stopped just 4 feet shy of the pin, and sank the putt for a birdie.

After a solid drive on the 17th hole, Cannell played her second shot, with cliffs surrounding the green on the right. Her chip came up short, leaving a long putt for par. She missed the putt and settled for a bogey.

On the par-5 18th hole, Cannell landed her second shot pin-high left of the green. Her chip shot stopped just a foot from the hole, and she sank the putt for birdie to finish the round.

“That’s probably going to be the last time I’ll be at Bandon in a long time,” Cannell said. “Just being able to play there is amazing, and that’s kind of what I was focused on — just playing my best to enjoy where I was.”

With a 1-under 35 on the back nine, Cannell finished strong, carding a 73 to win the tournament by a single shot. Her victory marked her second straight OGA Winter Classic Championship.

“I’d like to thank my parents for making these opportunities always available to me,” Cannell said. “And I want to thank my community for always supporting me and keeping me strong and motivated even when things get hard.”

Last year Cannell shot a 2-over 73 to win the event. She also had the lowest score of the 15-18 boys and girls divisions.
