UMATILLA — Three all-girls robotics teams from Clara Brownell Middle School in Umatilla competed in the Oregon FIRST Tech Challenge Championship in Hillsboro.
The three teams — 7470 Mystery Bots, 15435 Femgineers and 17366 Giraffe Guardians — faced off against 45 high school teams from across the state at the robotics competition March 15-16.
According to a Umatilla School District press release, Team 15435 Femgineers earned the second place judges award, which recognizes teams for their efforts and positive impact throughout the competition.
“It was a good experience to see how nice people were even though we were competing against each other,” Lillie Remington, of the Femgineers team, said. “On the field, it was very serious, but in the pits, it wasn’t. The teams were really nice and helped us with super glue and our batteries.”
At the competition, the teams saw new design ideas and learned ways to improve their robots. The Umatilla School District said all three teams worked hard, learned a lot and represented Umatilla well.
“We’re proud of them,” the district stressed in its release.
During the off-season, the teams plan to continue working on their robots and building their skills.
