HERMISTON James M. “Jim” Kindall, longtime Stanfield resident, died on Sept. 27, at Regency Health and Rehabilitation in Hermiston at the age of 88.

He was born on Nov. 5, 1918 in Coolidge, Kan., to John and Florence Rogers Kindall.

Jim was raised and attended school in Coolidge, Kan., graduating from high school in 1937. He then moved to the Pilot Rock area where he first worked on a farm and then later during the winter of 1940 he helped build the lodge at Lehman Hot Springs before returning to farming. Jim married Mary Johnson on Oct. 19, 1941 in Yuma, Ariz. They lived in Hawthorne, Calif., where Jim received training as a diesel mechanic before going to work for North American Aviation on the engine assembly of the P-51. After the war he worked as an auto mechanic for a year before returning to Pilot Rock and returning to farming. They moved to Stanfield a short time later on the Johnson Homestead where they have lived since.

Jim raised corn, alfalfa, and mint as well as raising turkeys for 13 years. He retired in 1979 from farming although he continued to work on the Mills Farm for several years as a mechanic. Jim enjoyed making and fixing things in his shop. He enjoyed the challenge of building a part, a tool, a whole piece of machinery, or anything he might need on or around the farm. Jim enjoyed the fiddle and after repairing some violins he decided to build some from scratch for himself and his family. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and had served on the Stanfield School Board, PGG Board of Directors, and on the Stanfield Irrigation District. Jim enjoyed archery hunting, fishing, reading, and was a rock hound.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Kindall, Stanfield; daughters, Marilyn Jean Olson and husband Herb, Littleton, Colorado, Barbara Ann Weissenfluh, Kennewick, Wash., and Kathleen Louise Kindall and husband Dan Boyd, Richland, Wash.; sisters, Cora Ashmore, Syracuse, Kan., and Mary Schoonover, Hugo, Colo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
