Iris Mae Case

HERMISTON Iris Mae Case died Sunday, Oct. 7 at Sun Terrace Assisted Living Facility at the age of 89.

Iris was born on Nov. 7, 1917 at the family farm in Cheyenne County, Nebraska to parents Joe Oliver and Sarah Ellen (Baker) Edmonds. She attended school in the small community of Bird City, Kans. before moving to Oregon with family and marrying Dwight W. Case in 1940. Dwight’s work in construction lead the Cases to Hermiston. Iris worked a short time in the cafeteria at Good Shepherd Hospital before becoming a Hermiston School District employee, working as a cook at Hermiston Senior High School, West Park and Sunset elementary schools. Dwight eventually began working for the Hermiston School District as a custodian at Hermiston Senior High and Sunset Elementary. Iris enjoyed gardening, cake decorating, crochet, embroidery and traveling. In 2002, Iris moved to Sun Terrace Assisted Living Facility in Hermiston. She enjoyed her time there and appreciated all the kindness from friends and caregivers.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dwight in 1989, daughter Karen Marr in 1981 and son Larry Case in 1995.

Iris is survived by her daughter Joyce Houle of Pendleton; sister Verta Smith of Grand Marias, Minn., the only surviving sibling; five grandchildren: Lori Ann Marr of Gresham, Tracey Lynn Marr of Nocona, Texas, Lance Case and James D. Houle, both of Portland; and Jake Houle of Ellensburg, Wash.; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A private memorial is planned for the immediate family. Private burial was held at the Hermiston Cemetery.
