David C. Clancy, 47, of Bourbonnais, Ill., was operating a Freightliner truck pulling two box trailers loaded with general freight when the accident occurred around 10:30 p.m., according to the Oregon State Police. The combination of vehicles were coming downhill westbound on I-84 near milepost 222 in the left lane negotiating a right curve. As Clancy was braking, the rear trailer’s brakes locked up causing the trailers and truck to flip onto its left side. The vehicles slid down the highway to the inside shoulder and collided with the end of a guardrail.

Clancy was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the OSP, it was unclear whether Clancy was using a seat belt.

A passenger in the truck was in the sleeper berth. Kenneth L. Turner, age 53, from Justice, Ill. was trapped in the truck until removed by fire personnel. Turner received minor injuries and was transported by Pendleton Ambulance to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Pendleton where he was treated and released.

The vehicles are registered to Yellow Transportation Inc.

OSP troopers from Pendleton and Hermiston are continuing the investigation. Speed and driver error are being investigated as contributing factors.

OSP was assisted at the scene by ODOT and Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Police and Fire Departments.

The right westbound lane was closed for several hours until the vehicles were removed.
