FINAL SCORE: Dairy Queen 11 Umatilla Electric 6

After 30 hours of nonstop baseball, the Hermiston Babe Ruth Moonlight Tournament culminated in a classic battle between two of Hermiston’s own clubs for the championship.

The undefeated Hermiston Dairy Queen club faced off against loser’s bracket champion Hermiston Umatilla Electic Co-op on Sunday at Weber Field, with DQ coming away victorious, 11-6.

It took a great defensive play from the boys of DQ to secure the win. After UEC’s Mitchell Lincoln drove in a run with a groundout to bring his club within two runs, UEC’s Rylen Crawford attempted to take third base and was cut down, ending the rally.

After the great defense, DQ came to the plate in the fifth and tacked on three more runs. Singles by Tyler Muldoon and Jerith Maine, along with four walks in the inning, fueled the DQ rally in the fifth to put the game away.

In the early going, it looked like UEC would run away with another tournament victory, having thumped on Milton-Freewater the prior game, 17-2. UEC took advantage of a throwing error to tack on two unearned runs on the play, and three total in the first inning to go up. 3-1.

Dairy Queen answered in the second inning with a Zach Studer RBI-single, which ended up plating two runs after UEC tried to throw out Studer advancing to second. DQ took a 6-3 advantage after two innings.

UEC’s Nathan Rice hit a towering fly ball into center in the fourth, and DQ communication problems let the ball fall to the Weber Field grass harmlessly. Coupled with another error, UEC drew within one in the fourth inning, 6-5.

John Couture earned the win on the hill for DQ, pitching four innings. He struck out four and gave up eight hits in the winning effort. He also went 2 for 4 at the plate.

Studer led the way for the DQ offense, going a perfect 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Austin Kopacz went 2 for 2 and Maine collected three hits in four at-bats.

After the conclusion of the title game, the Hermiston Babe Ruth board of directors announced its volunteers of the year and coach of the year. Sherena Clements and Juan and Blanca Lopez were named volunteers of the year and Al Demos was named coach of the year.

The Hermiston all-star tournament teams were also named, and will begin district competition at the district tournament July 6 at Bob White Field in Pendleton.

If the teams do well enough in Pendleton, the 15-year-olds will head to the state tournament in Ontario. The 14 year-olds will be in The Dalles.
