ECHO — The Echo Cougars reaped the rewards of a successful regular season from the Special District 1-West coaches. After winning the 1A 6-man title, the state accolades followed.
Senior Dom Curiel, who was the SD1-West offensive player of the year, was named the 1A 6-man all-state offensive player of the year, voted on by the state coaches.
In all, six Cougars earned all-state honors, and Echo coach Thomas Van Nice was named the all-state coach of the year.
“It’s great,” Van Nice said of the state honors. “That little extra recognition for those boys and the team as a whole is great.”
Curiel, who earned first-team all-league and all-state honors at wide receiver and defensive back, is nothing short of a Swiss Army knife.
During the regular season, he had 1,800 yards between passing, receiving and rushing, along with 28 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 26 tackles and two interceptions.
In the playoffs, Curiel ran for 360 yards and seven touchdowns, had 313 receiving yards and five touchdowns, and threw for 377 yards and five touchdowns. Defensively, he had 24 tackles.
“The thing with him, he has always been very talented, but in the second half of the season he stepped up into that leadership role,” Van Nice said of Curiel. “That was evident when he’d pull guys off and Sam (Wyse) would have a great game. It speaks volumes of how his mental game has changed.”
Curiel was the only Cougar to earn first team all-league honors, but six of his teammates were elected to the second and honorable mentions teams.
Sam Wyse, a senior, was a second-team running back and defensive back. He also earned second-team all-state honors as a defensive back. During the regular season, he accounted for 800 yards of offense with 10 touchdowns and 21 tackles.
Senior Kobe Harwood was a second-team guard and honorable mention linebacker. He was an all-state second-team selection at guard. He finished with 14 tackles.
Sophomore Mack Murdock was a second-team defensive end and earned all-state honors at the same position. He had 27 tackles and six interceptions.
Senior Keegin Chitty was a second-team pick as a receiver in SD1-West and a second-team selection as a receiver. He had more than 600 yards of offense and seven total touchdowns.
Sophomore quarterback Kohlvin Wyse was a second-team all-league selection and was an all-state honorable mention pick. He threw for 11 touchdowns during the regular season and had 513 yards passing with eight touchdowns in the playoffs.
Junior Wil Thackeray earned all-league honorable mention honors as a running back. He accumulated more than 400 yards of offense.
