Stanfield drops road match to Hawks

LA PINE — Stanfield’s Mazie Reeser had 12 kills and five blocks, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Tigers dropped a 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 nonleague road match to the Hawks on Saturday, Sept. 23.

“We are in a bit of a slump right now, but I have great confidence in our ladies that they will do what is needed to turn the page going into this week,” Stanfield coach Blaine Ganvoa said.

Mykael Graham handed out 27 assists for the Tigers, while Kylee Jackson had 14 digs, eight kills and four blocks, and Kayla Monkus seven kills and 10 digs.

ECHO DROPS 2 — The Cougars had a tough go of things Saturday at the Old Oregon League Crossover, dropping a 25-6, 25-11 match to Powder Valley, and a 25-13, 25-17 match to Joseph.

On the day, Nevaeh Thew had six kills, four assists and seven digs, while Kenzie Hendrix had three kills, seven assists and seven digs.

NYSSA 3, UMATILLA 1 — The Vikings took the first set off the host Bulldogs before falling 22-25, 25-16, 25-8, 25-17 on Saturday in Eastern Oregon League play.

Mischa Hill had nine assists for Umatilla (0-5 EOL), while Kianna Ramirez had six kills, Maddie Rico seven kills, and Avery Gutierrez three kills.

VALE 3, UMATILLA 0 — Umatilla ran into a strong Vale team Saturday, falling 25-5, 25-9, 25-7 on the road in Eastern Oregon League play.

“We came against a tough team with strong hitters,” Umatilla coach Samantha Era said. “We worked to protect by blocking and digging some good hits. Blocks by Dulce Serrano and Leslie Rivera helped protect the net.”

RIVERSIDE DROPS 2 — Vale and Nyssa were a bit too much for the Pirates to handle on the road in Eastern Oregon League play Saturday.

The Vikings beat the Pirates 25-6, 25-7, 25-7, while the Bulldogs posted a 25-12, 25-20, 25-17 victory.

Yahaira Serrano had 14 digs against Nyssa, while the Pirates (1-3 EOL) and 13 kills as a team.

CRANE 3, ECHO 0 — The Tigers dropped their second match in a row, falling on the road to the Mustangs 25-16, 25-18, 25-23 on Friday.

“In set one, we were still hungover from our loss last night (to Heppner,” Stanfield coach Blaine Ganvoa said. “The ladies came back strong in the next two sets, and we were up in both, but still need to find a way to finish.”

Mazie Reeser led the Tigers with 13 kills, two blocks and eight digs. Mykael Graham handed out 16 assists, while Kylee Jackson added four kills, two blocks and eight digs, and Kayla Munkus 10 digs.

HEPPNER 3, STANFIELD 2 — The Mustangs rallied from two sets down to beat the visiting Tigers 23-25, 10-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-8 in Blue Mountain Conference action on Thursday.

“What a game,” Heppner coach Mindy Wilson said. “Every set was a battle, and every player on and off the court worked hard for each and every point. The second set, we just couldn’t get our bearings right, but after that set, we never looked back.”

Maya Payne led the Mustangs with 10 kills, 18 assists, 20 digs and three aces, while Ava Gerry had 11 kills, 16 assists, 12 digs and four aces. Hallee Hisler chipped in 10 kills, while Morgan Cutsforth had seven kills and 19 digs, Katie Spivey 37 digs, and Kadie Henrichs 15 digs.

“We knew they had some tough blockers at the net, so we worked this week on how to work around them, and it paid off,” Wilson said. “I’m very proud of them tonight and the mental toughness that it took to battle back.”

IONE/ARLINGTON 3, SPRAY/MITCHELL/WHEELER 1 — The Cardinals improved to 3-0 in Big Sky League play with a 25-16, 20-25, 25-4, 25-18 road win over the Rattlers on Thursday.

“We have been working on some coverage changes and our transition speed,” I/A coach Dawn Eynetich said. “We still have some work to do, but it’s paying off.”

Calli Troutman led the Cardinals (10-1) with seven kills and six blocks, while Jolene Serrano had eight kills and was 12-for-12 from the service line. Grace Claughton was 19-for-19 serving with four aces, three kills and three blocks.

HERMISTON 3, PASCO 1 — Hermiston picked up its second Mid-Columbia Conference win a row, beating visiting Pasco 25-19, 25-13, 28-30, 25-8 on Tuesday.

Lucie Nguyen led Hermiston (2-3) with 24 assists, and served at 100% with five aces. Camryn Hall added 17 digs and five aces, and Izzy Simmons had 13 kills and eight aces on 100% serving.

ECHO 3, NIXYAAWII 0 — Also on Tuesday, Jaki Bartoschek had 11 kills as the Cougars picked up a 25-15, 25-12, 25-19 Old Oregon League road win over the Golden Eagles.

Nevaeh Thew added eight kills and 11 assists for Echo (3-1 OOL), while Abi Toombs had seven aces, Kenzie Hendrix seven assists, and Athina Siedman four aces and three kills.

CONDON 3, RIVERSIDE 0 — The Blue Devils improved to 5-1 overall with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-16 nonleague road win over the Pirates on Tuesday.

“All the girls played hard and played together as a team,” Riverside coach Bailey Weinke said.

The Pirates (2-8) combined for 11 kills and 13 aces — eight of which came from Yahaira Serrano.

HEPPNER 4, WESTON-MCEWEN 1 — The Mustangs picked up a big Blue Mountain Conference road win Monday, beating the TigerScots 26-24, 25-23, 17-25, 25-0.

“We had our struggles today, but came back each time and battled as a team to get the win,” Heppner coach Mindy Wilson said. “We played them tough at the net, which was big for us.”

Ava Gerry led the Mustangs (10-4 overall, 2-0 BMC) with six kills, nine assists, four aces and five digs.

Maya Payne added seven kills, while Hallee Hisler had five blocks and two aces, Keeley Nairns three blocks, and Katie Spivey eight digs and two aces.

The TigerScots (5-7), who fell to 0-2 in conference play, got 12 kills, eight digs and two aces from Jayden Sparks, while Delaynee Angell had 10 kills, Addie Perkins 36 assists, and Kylie Thornton 17 digs.

“We started out digging ourselves into a hole the first two sets and we just couldn’t recover fast enough to get the win,” W-M coach Marie Cain said. “I’m proud of the girls. They played hard and had parts of the match where we played our game. Jayden had a good game being aggressive at the net and keeping energy on the court.”
