HERMISTON — Hermiston midfielder Angel Cadenas was named to the first team, and Ricardo Sotelo was named coach of the year by the Mid-Columbia Conference soccer coaches.
The Bulldogs also had midfielder Jairo Ramirez Ortega named to the second team, and forward Abel Alatorre, midfielder Carlos Cadenas and defender Erick Villarreal named to the honorable mention team.
Sotelo, in his first year at the helm with the Bulldogs, led his team to a 10-9 record and the 3A District 8 title game, where they lost a 4-1 game to Mead on Thursday, May 9.
“It’s a great feeling, but it could not be possible without my amazing coaching staff that has supported my every decision along the way,” Sotelo said of the honor. “My two assistants (Oscar Contreras and Juan Maldonado) and I graduated high school together (2013), played four years together at Hermiston, and now we are doing it together.”
The Bulldogs scored the third most goals in conference play with 33, trailing just Pasco (68) and Chiawana (45).
Junior Angel Cadenas had a team-leading 10 goals and five assists this season.
“Angel stepped up big time when we needed him,” Sotelo said. “This season, he was striking phenomenally and it led to some amazing goals.”
Ramirez Ortega, a junior, scored two goals and handed out three assists, while junior Carlos Cadenas chipped in one goal and five assists.
Alatorre, the lone Hermiston senior on the list, was second in scoring with seven goals and four assists.
“Unfortunately, he had an injury at the start of the season and missed the first four games with a sprained ankle,” Sotelo said. “Coming off that, he was still able to produce seven goals and four assists.”
Villarreal, a junior, was part of a defense that allowed 2.4 goals a game. He also chipped in one goal and three assists.
