BOARDMAN Howard William Chance died Thursday, May 17, at his home in Boardman at the age of 84.
He was born on May 24, 1916, in Portland to James and Annabell Wade Chance. He was raised and attended schools in Portland. Howard then joined the United States Army where he served as a medic during World War II in England. He married Janice Luchak and they lived in the Portland area.
Howard designed and built custom homes throughout the Columbia Gorge all the way to Pendleton. The Chances moved to Boardman in 1982 and Janice Chance died in 1989.
Howard married Priscilla Garner on June 9, 1990, in Irrigon. He was a member of the Hermiston Seventh-day Adventist Church, VFW and the American Legion. He helped to build the Irrigon Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Howard enjoyed gardening, studying history and aviation.
He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Chance of Boardman; sons, Michael Chance, Bill Chance and Tim Garner, all of Oregon; sister, Jean R. Shibley of Vancouver, Wash.; and four grandsons.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janice Chance; and brother, Dr. Russell Chance.
A Celebration of Life Service was held Monday, May 21, at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. A private burial will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
