PENDLETON — Nixyaawii hit the 100-point mark Saturday, Jan. 27, in a 100-36 Old Oregon League victory over Echo, marking the first time in more than four years that the Golden Eagles reached the century mark.
“Tonight, things were going in,” said Nixyaawii coach Jeremy Barkley. “It’s hard to tell them not to score. We are here to play the game, and they played outstanding tonight.”
The last time Nixyaawii scored 100 or more points was in a 103-28 home win over Cove on Jan. 17, 2020.
It was raining baskets in the first quarter for the Golden Eagles, who flew out to a 33-10 lead behind 10 points from Baron Moses, eight from Rylen Bronson, and seven from Symon Picard.
The lead ballooned to 55-20 at the half, and the Golden Eagles (13-3 overall, 6-0 OOL) outscored the Cougars 45-16 in the second half.
“We definitely wanted to come out and hit our shots,” Barkley said. “They ran the floor really well and looked for the open person. There are a lot of assists in this game. They gave us fits in Echo. Today, we pushed the tempo we wanted.”
Moses finished the game with a triple double — 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Picard had 22 points, five steals and four rebounds, and Bronson had 19 points, 13 rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Moses and Picard did not play in the fourth quarter.
For Echo (11-8, 3-3), Dom Curiel had 12 points, while Sam Wyse and Jack Sperr each had five.
HERMISTON 72, HANFORD 47 — Isaac Corey poured in 25 points, and the Bulldogs topped the Falcons in Mid-Columbia Conference play on the road.
Hanford came out on fire, taking an 18-12 lead after the first quarter, but the Falcons fizzled from there.
Corey scored 14 of his points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs went on a 29-2 scoring spree to take a commanding 41-20 lead at the half.
Hermiston (6-8 MCC) pushed the lead to 55-31 after three, and the Bulldogs put the game away from there.
Grant Olsen added 19 points, and Drake Devin 13 for the Bulldogs, who have won two in a row.
Jordan Queral led the Falcons with 14 points, while Troy Jensen and Trevor Kaiser each had nine.
UMATILLA 63, BURNS 58 — Micheal Montez had a game-high 27 points to lead the Vikings to an Eastern Oregon League road win over the Hilanders.
The teams were tied 15-15 after the first quarter, then Umatilla (11-6 overall, 2-1 EOL) went on a 22-14 run in the second quarter to take a 37-29 lead at the half.
Burns (13-4, 2-3) outscored Umatilla 29-26 in the second half, but it wouldn’t be enough.
Mike McGee added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Vikings, while Davi Garcia had 10 points and four assists, and RJ Estrada hauled down 11 rebounds to go with four steals.
Zane Perry-Kozeni led the Hilanders with 15 points.
STANFIELD 105, IRRIGON 40 — The Tigers gave the hometown crowd a thrill, scoring more than 100 points in a Blue Mountain Conference victory over the Knights.
According to the OSAA online scores that go back to the 2013-14 season, Stanfield has not scored 100 points from then to now. They came close on Feb. 10, 2017, in a 99-70 win over Weston-McEwen.
The Tigers came out shooting in the first quarter, taking a 30-7 lead behind eight points from Michael Odell.
Stanfield (12-5 overall, 7-0 BMC) kept the ball rolling in the second with a 29-14 run for a 59-21 lead at the half.
Every Stanfield player scored during the game, with Jesus Arellano leading the way with 15 points. Odell added 13 points, while Israel Monkus chipped in 10.
Curtis Krogh and Brock Locey led the Knights (1-17, 0-6) with eight points each.
RIVERSIDE 56, NYSSA 47 — Freshman Cooper Cemore scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half to rally the Pirates to an Eastern Oregon League road win over the Bulldogs.
Riverside (17-3 overall, 3-2 EOL) led 15-8 after the first quarter, but Nyssa went on an 18-9 run in the second to take a 26-24 lead at the half.
The Bulldogs led 40-39 heading into the fourth quarter, where the Pirates went on a 17-7 scoring spree to secure the win.
Wyatt Browne added 12 points for the Pirates, while Riley Lantis added eight.
Francisco Miranda led Nyssa (4-14, 0-6) with 15 points.
DUFUR 55, IONE/ARLINGTON 24 — The Cardinals couldn’t buy a basket in their Big Sky League road loss to the Rangers.
Dufer jumped out to a 31-15 lead at the half, then used an 18-2 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Cardinals (3-11 overall, 1-5 BSL) got 12 points from Ryder Stewerd, and four each from Henry Giefing and Carter Eynetich.
Kordell White led the Rangers (13-2, 8-0) with 12 points, while Cody Phillips added 11.
UNION 56, PILOT ROCK 42 — The Bobcats took an early lead, then had to fend off the Rockets for an Old Oregon League home win.
Union (15-5 overall, 5-1 OOL) led 32-20 at the half, but Pilot Rock came out in the third quarter with a 14-4 run to pull within 36-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bobcats used a 19-8 scoring spree in the fourth to secure the win.
Wesley Stillman led the Rockets (6-12, 1-5) with 16 points, while Chase Corwin added 12.
Tee Ledbetter led the Bobcats with 14 points, with Chase Koshinsky adding 12.
Girls basketball
HANFORD 70, HERMISTON 59 — The Bulldogs had their two-game win streak snapped with a Mid-Columbia Conference road loss to the Falcons.
Hermiston (6-8 MCC) led 17-15 after the first quarter — thanks to seven points by Ellie Heideman — but found itself down 27-25 at the half.
Payton Schmidt scored eight of her 15 points in the third quarter as Hanford went on a 22-15 run to take a 49-42 lead.
Lynnea Moran, who led the Falcons with 23 points, scored 11 in the fourth quarter as Hanford pulled away down the stretch.
Izzy Simmons led the Bulldogs with 26 points, while Heideman and Aspyn Inners each had 11.
IONE/ARLINGTON 53, DUFUR 20 — Najiah Knight had 16 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Cardinals to a Big Sky League road win over the Rangers.
Vicki De La Torre scored eight of her 10 points in the first quarter as I/A jumped out to a 26-4 lead. The Cardinals extended their lead to 33-8 at the half and never looked back.
I/A (11-5 overall, 7-1 BSL), which has won three in a row, also got 11 points from Grace Claughton.
Hayley Peterson led Dufur (3-11, 2-6) with 12 points.
ELGIN 49, GRISWOLD 36 — The Grizzlies are still looking for their first Old Oregon League win after dropping a game on the road against the Huskies.
“Our girls came out and played hard the entire game,” Griswold coach Kevin Porter said. “Very proud of their effort from start to finish. Saige Jensen and Ellie Morris both had very nice games for us today, but this was truly a team effort.”
Elgin took control of the game in the first half, outscoring the Grizzlies (6-10 overall, 0-5 OOL) 25-15 in the first half. Griswold played right with the Huskies in the second half, but could not erase the deficit.
Jensen led the Grizzlies with 16 points, while Morris added 12.
Brooke Myers led the Huskies (7-10, 3-2) with 12 points, while Carly McLaughlin added 11.
“Saige got a ton of rebounds and steals, and was able to convert many of those into baskets,” Porter said. “Ellie shot the ball well for us today, and Elliana (Boatright) played great defense in the post area for us today. Elgin shot the ball from outside extremely well compared to our first matchup.”
ECHO 59, NIXYAAWII 29 — The Cougars led from start to finish in an Old Oregon League road win over the Golden Eagles.
Echo, which leads the OOL with a 6-0 record, led 26-10 at the half, and 38-24 after three quarters. The Cougars put the game out of reach with a 21-5 run in the fourth quarter.
Nevaeh Thew led the Cougars (14-4) with 21 points, while Mayela De La Fuente added 13, and Kenzie Hendrix 10.
Amariana Willingham led the Golden Eagles (6-10, 3-3) with 11 points, while Ella Stewart added 10.
UNION 55, PILOT ROCK 13 — The Bobcats improved to 5-1 in Old Oregon League play with a home win over the Rockets.
Union (15-5 overall) took a 17-7 lead in the first quarter, then held Pilot Rock scoreless in the second and fourth quarters to secure the win.
Paedyn Benett led the Rockets (4-13, 0-6) with four points, while Ali Smith had three.
Sawyer Shoemaker led the Bobcats with 24 points, while Kaelyn Shoemaker had nine.
STANFIELD 76, IRRIGON 22 — The Tigers scored early and often in handing the visiting Knights a Blue Mountain Conference loss.
“Played with some fire after a lack of fire last night,” Stanfield coach Dan Sharp said.
Stanfield (12-5 overall, 5-2 BMC) got 10 points from Saira Arellano in the first quarter as the Tigers raced out to a 29-5 lead.
Kayla Monkus scored 12 of her 22 points in the second quarter as the Tigers took a commanding 47-9 lead, and Kylee Jackson had a big third quarter with eight points as Stanfield’s lead grew to 68-18.
Jackson finished with 15 points, while Mazie Reeser added 14 and Arellano 12.
Kaydence Emery led the Knights (2-16, 0-6) with eight points, while Ruby Chavez added four.
NYSSA 42, RIVERSIDE 18 — The Bulldogs used a big second half to pull away from the Pirates for an Eastern Oregon League home win.
Nyssa (12-7 overall, 5-1 EOL) led 18-12 at the half, then went on a 24-10 scoring spree in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Crystal Sanchez and Julie Magaña each had five points for the Pirates (10-9, 0-5), while Brianna Thomas had seven rebounds.
Clarissa Arizmendi led the Bulldogs with 10 points, while Clarita Arizmendi and Brynlee Hartley each added eight.
BURNS 52, UMATILLA 16 — Ashley Wright had a game-high 26 points to lead the Hilanders to an Eastern Oregon League home win over the Vikings.
Burns (13-4 overall, 3-2 EOL) took a 30-5 lead at the half, then held Umatilla scoreless in the third for a 43-5 lead.
Haidyn Thompson led the Vikings (5-13, 0-3) with three points, while six players each scored two points.
College women’s basketball
COLUMBIA BASIN 90, BLUE MOUNTAIN 54 — The Timberwolves fell behind early and couldn’t make up the difference in the second half, falling to the Hawks in NWAC East play in Pasco.
CBC got out to a 20-7 lead after the first quarter, and led 42-15 at the half.
Lexi Robertson led BMCC with 10 points and six rebounds, while Leanna Lepe, Josie Wilson and Kyra Jacobsen each had eight points.
Trinidie Nichols had 20 points, seven assists and eight steals for CBC, while Lexie Heath had 11 points and seven steals, and Mickayla Robertson 11 points and seven rebounds.
College men’s basketball
COLUMBIA BASIN 94, BLUE MOUNTAIN 78 — Ta’Veus Randle poured in 31 points and had seven rebounds to lead the Hawks to an NWAC East home win over the Timberwolves.
BMCC had a 45-41 lead at the half, but CBC came out in the second half with a 53-33 run to secure the win.
Kaden Johnson and Dylan Westlake each had 16 points for BMCC, while Mason Van Tine came off the bench to score 15. Jaquone Gatling added 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Swimming
Saralen Campbell won the 200 freestyle (2:12.36), and Blanca Botello Martin won the 100 backstroke (1:10.41) and 100 butterfly (1:11.99) as the Pendleton girls swam away with the team title at the Madras Invitational.
The Bucks rolled up 460 points, with Redmond second at 335. The Pendleton boys finished fourth with 180 points, and the Bucks won the combined title with 640 points.
“The ladies came away with the win, our small but mighty guys took fourth for the combined team win,” Pendleton coach Tony Nelson said. “Great swims today. It’s hard to believe we spent the first month of the season in a hotel pool and elementary school gym.”
Campbell also swam a leg on the 200 freestyle relay team with Grace Pitner, Sophie Nelson and Maryn Broker that placed second with a time of 1:55.37.
Pitner, Botello Martin, Campbell and Sara Airoldi turned in a time of 4:16.11 to place second in the 400 free relay.
In the 200 medley relay, Broker, Josie Nelson, Botello Martin and Sophie Nelson clocked a 2:09.74 to place second.
Pitner picked up a second-place finish in the 50 free (28.46), and was third in the 100 free with a time of 1:04.08. Campbell was second in the 100 butterfly (1:14.75).
For the boys, Jack Bonzani finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.24), and was seventh in the 50 free (25.97).
The Bucks came away with a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team of Owen Burt, Khoda Brown, Bonzani and Nathan Burcham turned in a time of 2:09.53.
Burt picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM (2:48.13) and the 100 backstroke (1:16.36), while Brown was fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:21.69).
Boys wrestling
Pendleton crowned three champions, and the Bucks won the team title at the Colton Holly Memorial Tournament in Wilsonville.
The Bucks rolled up 305.5 points, with Centennial a distant second with 255. Forest Grove was third with 252.5.
Cole Roy (132), Owen Golter (138) and Aidan Perkins (165) won titles for the Bucks, while three other wrestlers placed second.
Roy opened the tournament with a 5-4 decision over Jesus Alfaro of Century, then pinned Manuel Jaquez of Forest Grove in 41 seconds to reach the quarterfinals. Roy then pinned Jumo Narruhn of Barlow in 1:45, and booked his spot in the finals with a 4:55 pin of Aiden Warfield of Barlow.
In the championship match, Roy recorded a 10-0 major decision over Samuel Ramirez of Centennial.
Golter pinned his first two opponents to reach the semifinals, where he earned an 8-2 decision over Bradley Hageman of Forest Grove to reach the finals.
In the title bout, Golter recorded a 6-0 decision over Chase Bargender of Oregon City.
Perkins used two pins and a 12-3 major decision to reach the championship match against Kenny Schroeder of Centennial.
In the finals, the two men were tied 7-7 going into the final round, where Perkins registered two takedowns and earned caution point for an 11-8 victory.
Pendleton’s Landon Willman placed second at 113, getting pinned by Aiden Welsick of Centennial in the title match.
At 120, the Bucks got a second-place finish from Ethan Zimmerman, who lost a 5-3 decision to Keenan Enriquez of Forest Grove.
Also at 120, Oregon Farwell placed third for the Bucks, winning his last match by fall over teammate Quinn Kennedy in 4:45.
Kainen Zimmerman finished second at 157, dropping a 9-4 decision to Elijah Sweet of Centennial in the championship match.
At 175, Pendlseton’s Dakota Malin finished third, pinning Namari McKibben-Denson in 3:38 in the third-place match.
BANK OF EASTERN OREGON — Irrigon’s Austin Wells won the 285-pound title, and the Knights placed second in the team standings at Heppner High School.
Hood River Valley won the team title with 239 points, followed by Irrigon (171.5), Elgin (170.5), Grant Union (156), Heppner (100), Riverside (95). Echo was 11th with 35 points.
Wells, who won all three of his matches by fall, pinned Brandon Medlock of Elgin in the title bout in 3:16.
Also for the Knights, Preston Slawson (120) and Josiah Moreno (190) were second, Anthony Vasquez (113) and Zachary Parton (157) were third, and Irwyn Murguia (138) and Emilio Romero (165) were fourth.
Riverside’s Aiden Murillo won the 150-pound title with a 9-8 decision over Hood River’s Jack McLaughlin in the championship match.
Also for the Pirates, Andrew Calderon (138) was second, Antonio Cuevas (285) was third, and Anthony Castaneda (120) was fourth.
Heppner’s Jaime Cavan pinned all three of his opponents en route to the 215-pound title. In the championship match, he pinned Taylor Thomas of Grant Union in 31 seconds.
The Mustangs also got a second place finish from Zachary Brown at 157, while Landon McMahon was fourth at 175, and Gino Gallegos was fourth at 285.
Cooper Yensen of McLoughlin finished second at 144, getting pinned by Brady Otley of Crane in 1:03 in the championship match. Also placing second for the Pioneers was Dallen Duncan at 132.
For Echo, Caleb Glenn was third at 120, while Wyatt Harris was fourth at 150.
Girls wrestling
Heppner crowned two champions and won the team title at the Bank of Eastern Oregon tournament in Heppner.
Denisse Bracamontes won both of her matches to capture the 115-pound title for the Mustangs. At 135, Journey Cavan-Harris won both of her matches for the title.
Also for Heppner, Loren Trujillo was second at 125, and Keeley Nairns was second at 235.
Echo’s Averi Fisher won the 125-pound title with a pair of wins.
Umatilla’s Rylee Sanchez finished second at 145.
HOOD RIVER GIRLS INVITATIONAL — Irrigon Stephanie Romero finished second at 235, and the Knights finished 23rd in the team standings at Hood River High School.
Romero lost a 3-0 decision to Mallory Lusco of Grant Union in the title match.
Romero was the only one of the five Irrigon wrestlers to place.
La Grande won the team title with 289 points, followed by McNary (171.5), Mountainside (123) and Grant Union (98).
