HERMISTON — The Hermiston High School wrestling program brought home some hardware from Mat Classic XXXVI, the Washington state championships, held Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome.

The boys team placed second for the fourth consecutive year. And the girls earned third — the first-ever team trophy at state.

Claiming a state championship title while leading the boys team was Jaysen Rodriguez. Other podium finishers were Aidan Larson, second; Dominic Echeverria, Jayden Martinez and Bryan Medelez, all third place; Jacoby Rodriguez; fourth; Mason Miracle, fifth; and Brayden Harrison, seventh.

The girls team was led by strong individual performances — Iaunny Ruiz and Tuta Sepeni, both placed third; Emily Stone and Kianna Gutierrez-Munoz, each placed fourth; Jaydan McKim, seventh; and Jorgia McKim, eighth.

HHS athletic/activities director Larry Usher said the community and school should be proud of the Hermiston wrestling program. The remarkable achievement, he said, is a testament of the hard work of Hermiston’s student-athletes, coaches and supporters.

“The way these athletes competed and represented Hermiston was incredible,” Usher said. “We are very excited about what the future holds, as we have the potential to continue excelling on both the boys and girls sides for years to come.”
