While we’re enjoying dry summer weather in the Columbia Basin, folks in Wisconsin still are dealing with flooding.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported early this week that while most victims of the June flooding were drying out, people in a couple of southeastern Wisconsin counties sustained more storm-related damage.

A posting that apparently first appeared on Layover.com, a truckers’ Web site, asked some astute questions and made a solid point:

“As we watched the flooding in the Midwest, have you noticed that there are no farmers running around with stolen plasma TVs or holding stolen liquor over their heads? There’s no looting or yelling ‘Where’s Bush? Where’s FEMA? Where’s my check?’ or ‘Why isn’t the government out here saving me and my farm?’ “

The writer said he’d noticed no reports of other countries coming to help or sending aid.

And where are the Revs. Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton, he wondered.

Of course, people in this agricultural-based community know the answers to those questions: farmers don’t believe anyone owes them a handout.
