- Hermiston's Mariah Delepierre competes in the 100-meter hurdles during the Columbia River Conference track and field championships Saturday in The Dalles. She won the event.
It was all purple and gold at the top of the team podium Saturday.
The Hermiston track teams swept the gold medals at the Columbia River Conference track and field championships in The Dalles and are sending 18 athletes to the state championships.
For the girls team, the meet was about who would finish second. Hermiston scored an eye-popping 255 points 100.5 points more than rival Pendleton.
The boys had a little more competitive run to the title, but were able to reel it in with 196.5 points. Pendleton finished second in that race as well with 168.5.
Eleven Bulldog girls will make the trip to historic Hayward Field in Eugene for the Class 5A meet, held May 20-21 at the University of Oregon track facility, but none were more impressive than senior Mariah Delepierre.
She won three events long jump, triple jump and 100-meter hurdles along with running a leg on the CRC-champion 4×100-meter relay team, making her qualified for four events.
Her qualifying distance of 17 feet, 2.25 inches has her seeded second in the Class 5A state meet, but shell need to make up more than a foot to catch North Eugenes Iris Anderson if she wants a state title.
Hermiston has eight girls qualified for more than one event and has nearly every event covered, with the exception of the 400 and pole vault.
Karla Gonzalez won the 200 meters with a time of 26.34 and placed second in the 100 with a 13.20. She is also part of the CRC-champion 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams Hermiston will be sending.
Abby Johnston will compete in both the hurdle events, plus the 4×400 relay at Hayward. She finished second to teammate Delepierre in the 100 hurdles, but won the 300 hurdles with a time of 46.81.
Freshman Katie Markwick continued to add to her already-impressive running resume with a CRC title in the 1500 (5:01.48) and a runner-up finish in the 800 (2:27.41).
Meet champions and second-place finishers qualify for the state meet.
Hermiston junior Kayla Blankenship earned a gold in the discus with a throw of 117-0 and second place in the shot put with a 37-2.25.
Junior Hope Butler will also compete in two events at state, the javelin and the 4×400. She won the javelin title with a 121-9, which is the fourth-seeded distance at the state meet.
Sophomore Ramona Faaeteete earned a pair of entries at state with a second-place jump in the long jump (16-1.75) and on the 4×100 relay team.
Senior Zaira Sanchez will run in both relays for the Dawgs.
Qualifying in one event for the Dawgs was McKenzie Byrd in the high jump (5-2), Kaylee Pratt in the triple jump (34-1) and Maggie Coleman in the 3000 (11:00.25).
While Byrd made it to state in only one event, she placed third in the javelin (111-4) and shot put (37-1).
On the boys side, the Dawgs long distance crew still has a stranglehold on the events.
Javier Velasco made the cut in both the 800 (2:04.05) and the 1500 (4:12.80) while Eduardo Juarez won the 3000 (9:04.16) and placed second in the 1500 (4:13.11).
Freshman Jose Macias earned a spot in the 3000 with a second-place time of 9:09.47 while another freshman, Alejandro Cisneros, missed out on state berths in both long distance runs with third-place finishes.
Senior thrower Riley Humphrey earned state bids with wins in the shot put (48-7.5) and discus (134-10) while David Barnett launched his personal-best throw in the javelin, 169-2, to win it and make it to state.
Ryan Ross will also compete in the shot put after he finished second at districts with a heave of 42-11.25.
Senior Cameron Meyers cleared 12-6 in the pole vault to win the CRC title and earn a spot at state.
