Thula Mae ‘Me Ma’ Hoyt

Thula Mae Me Ma Hoyt was born April 23rd, 1934, at Mt. Calm, Texas, to parents Loyd and Annie (Brown) Thompson. She died Saturday, February 18th, 2012, at her home in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 77.

She was raised in Mt. Calm and in Galveston, Texas. She moved to Portland, Oregon, in early 1940s, to the Tri-Cities, Washington, and to Umatilla, Oregon, in 1950 and graduated from Umatilla High School in 1952. On June 28th, 1952, she married Robert Clyde Hoyt in Pendleton, Oregon. They moved to San Diego, California, and Thula worked at the U.S. Navy Balboa Hospital as the snack bar manager while Bob was in the service. They moved to Hermiston 1954 and lived in Gresham, Oregon, for 9 years, where tole painting was her primary thing and she also worked as an extra in a couple of movies. They moved back to Hermiston for good and Thula worked several years at Walchlis potato plant. Thula also worked at Safeway for 8 years. She enjoyed tole painting, camping, hunting, fishing and the mountains, and was dubbed the Queen of yard sales. Thula was always busy and she loved her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert of Hermiston, Ore.; 2 sons, Rob and wife Carla Hoyt of Hermiston, Ore., and Jim and wife Sherri Hoyt of Hermiston, Ore.; daughter, Terri and her husband Larry Hunter of Pilot Rock, Ore.; niece, JoyceAnn Reddick of Hermiston, Ore.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents Loyd and Annie Thompson and a sister, Joyce Hunter.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at Burns Mortuary Chapel in Hermiston. Burial will follow at the Hermiston Cemetery.
