The driver of the Altima attempted to pass another vehicle, OSP said. The collision between the vehicles caused an explosion, OSP Sgt. Seth Cooney said, causing both vehicles to ignite. The fire spread to a nearby field along Westland Road and was extinguished by fire crews on scene.
Cooney said the size and momentum of the truck sent the Nissan car backward an estimated 200 feet.
Ernest Casey, who works at Columbia Basis Onion, down the road from where the crash occurred, saw black smoke coming from that area as he was returning from lunch earlier in the day. Casey parked his pickup on Westland Road, which was blocked off for police and fire agencies. He and passerby Mike Blais watched as crews worked to extinguish remaining flames.
When I got here, everything was black and orange, Blais said.
The death is the second resulting from a motor vehicle crash within one week.
