Saturday is full of events in Hermiston.
A short walk from Funfest, nestled in the shade at McKenzie Park, Hermiston Classics Car Club’s 20th annual Cool Rides Car Show offers a trip down memory lane — or a glimpse into another era when classic muscle dominated the roadway.
More than 85 cars were on display at the free show last year, and club President Gordon Blankenship said he hopes even more will attend this year.
The event begins Friday evening with a poker run and barbecue for the people showing cars, followed by Hermiston’s first Music in the Park event from 7-9 p.m. in McKenzie Park, which is free for anyone to attend. Hermiston Classics Car Club member Rusty Roe and his group, the Outsiders, will perform Friday and during the car show Saturday.
“They play a whole variety of things from country-western to rock and roll — the whole gamut, a little bit of everything,” Blankenship said.
The car show will also feature vendors, and about 30 trophies will be awarded to the participants at 3 p.m. Blankenship said the park features plenty of shade to offer attendees a break from the heat, and he encouraged people to check it out.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun,” he said of the show.

After Funfest and the car show wrap up, Club 24 will host the third annual Neon Nights 5k starting at 10 p.m. at the Oxbow trailhead at 1100 SW Elm Ave., Hermiston. The untimed race allows people of all ages to run or walk on the Oxbow Trail, and prizes will be awarded for people with the best glow-in-the-dark appearance.
Registration costs $30 for adults the day of the event, which includes a T-shirt and glow-in-the-dark accessories, and $20 for children ages 6 to 15. Children younger than 5 can participate for free without receiving the shirt and accessories. Preregistration is cheaper and can be completed by following links from hermistonchamber.com.
