SALEM — Oregon’s annual waterfowl hunt for military veterans and active military personnel is set for Feb. 3.
The hunt is statewide, although some public lands might not be open, including some Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife wildlife areas that protect big game, including the Elkhorn Wildlife Area in Baker and Union counties, and Bridge Creek in Umatilla County.
Daily hunt permits, where required during the regular season, are also required for the veterans hunt. At Fern Ridge Wildlife Area (East, West, and South Coyote units) and Sauvie Island Wildlife Area (Eastside, Westside and Oak Island) public hunt permits will be issued through a random drawing conducted at the check stations.
Hunters can take ducks (including mergansers), coot and geese at regular bag limits on Nov. 3.
Veterans (as defined in section 101 of title 38, United States Code) and members of the armed forces on active duty, including members of the National Guard and Reserves on active duty (other than for training) can participate.
Each hunter must have:
* A valid hunting license
* A valid state waterfowl or nonresident game bird validation
* A valid HIP validation
* A valid federal duck stamp
* Valid proof of veteran or active duty status issued by the U.S. Department of Defense or Veterans Affairs
